Sorry for the delay. I have spent most of my free computer time working on my MBA final, but now that it is done, here are some thoughts from my gaming session last week.
Waterloo: Mike and I had another go at the game and we are starting to get the hang of things. I started off early and organized my artillery to pound away at his fortified locations, which was very helpful. I was also able to better utilize my cavalry by backing them up with infantry. Waterloo has a ton of depth and truly seems to have the feeling of the Waterloo battle that it seeks to emulate. I think that, the next time we play, I will either block off enough time so that we can get an entire game in, or I will print out a copy of the map so that we can mark off the location of our troops halfway through and then pick it up again some other time.
Pampas Railways: This is the second time our group of three has gotten this great rail game out and I had an excellent time. I used clearclaw's suggestion, and placed some plexiglass over the map. This made it much easier to clean things up after the game. Mike ended up winning the game, and I think that we all learned a bit more about just how to play. As was noted in a recent review of most games by Winsome Games, they are not forgiving games. Nor do they want to be and nor do I want them to be. The demand good play, especially in the beginning of the game, but they reward that good play throughout the entire game. This makes them worth getting out time and time again and really makes you think about how you should alter your strategy to fully maximize your profits.
Update: Emanuele Ornella Day is coming together! I now have a room booked at the library from 10am-5pm and perhaps we will hit up the local sushi joint after 5. Either way, I look forward to a full day of great games.
