As you can see, the church was damaged during World War II. Instead of tearing it down or completely fixing it, the city held a contest to re-design the church. The winner solidified the structural integrity of the church and added a new section for people to worship in.
On the way to the subway stop with the church, however, I saw a flea market! Well, I wasn't going to pass that up, and I hopped back on the subway and went to see what could be found.
The correct answer is nothing, and I went back into itinerary mode and traveled to the Column. This monument is still on the Unter Den Linden, and if you look into the distance, you can see the Brandenburg Gates. I will have to look into my guidebook to see what this monument is for, but it is grand. They had a museum, but I decided I had had enough of museums for a while and didn't pay to go in. Monday is my HUGE museum day, so I am storing up for that.
Now, after visiting the column, I headed towards the Sony Center. Gunter gave me a pass to see a free movie at the CineMaxx theater which is next door to the center. Sadly, the only English movie that had was "This Is It," Michael Jackson's last movie. But what the heck, I decided to see it. And it was enjoyable. Plus, the seats were super comfortable, the best I have ever watched a movie in.
After the movie, I checked out the actual Sony Center. It's really just another shopping plaza, but it is nice, and the architecture is really cool.
After that, I re-visited Checkpoint Charlie. I didn't have my picture there, and I hoped to amend that.
Then it was off to the Brauhaus Mitte, a restaurant that the guidebook recommended. The book mentioned a particular dish: Crispy Knuckle of Pork with Sour Kraut and Mashed Potatoes. Well, I wanted that!
Finally, on the way home, I was given the final piece of proof I needed to tell Mom that, YES, they do celebrate Halloween in Germany!
Brad, you are hilarious! What they don't have in Germany, though, is the copy of At the Gates of Loyang I just played. It was awesome! You'd hate it, Brad. *^_^* It's a financial engine, and you can just butcher yourself before you have a clue what you're doing. Our first game was 16-15-15-15. Nicole won, Valerie easily had the tie-breaker with nearly 10 coins, then Ann, then me 1 coin behind Ann. Perhaps if I hadn't chosen to take 2 loans in Round 2 to ensure that I enjoyed the game, rather than wallowing in regrets about my never-played-this-before mistakes. ReplyDeleteI'm not being fair. I played all new [to me] games today: First, ONEXENO, then God's Playground, then Pylos, then At the Gates of Loyang. Can't wait 'til you're back in the States so we can have regular Treefrog days! *^_^*
