With Essen just around the corner, and myself sitting here trying to think of something to write about, I remembered that there are a bunch of neat games coming out. Oh yeah, and I will be at Essen. So, why not write about some of those neat games?
First up, Basket Boss. My friend Paul mentioned the two latest Cwali releases (Basket Boss and Tricky Trek) and I promptly pre-ordered the two games. Basket Boss really reminds me of Hollywood Blockbuster, except that you own a Basketball team instead of making movies. Each season begins with an auction for new basketball players to replace the original players on your team. At the end of the auction, the value of your team is assessed and the teams win trophies based on their strengths. The teams are also worth some amount of money based on their players. After this step, the managers (you) can choose to hire a variety of different characters which will assist you in the following turn. The game ends at the end of a predetermined number of rounds and the player with the most cash wins.
I was slightly hesitant to order this game as it didn't strike me as having that essential spark that would set it apart from, well, Hollywood Blockbuster. But the folks at Cwali have established quite a fan base and since their games are terribly difficult to get here in the States, I decided to go for it.
As a bonus, the 30 Euro price tag include Tricky Trek and three expansions for older Cwali games which I promptly sold on BGG for $20. As far as Tricky Trek goes, this year definitely seems to be the year of the cute animal racing game. I have already ordered Savannah Tails from the Fragor Brothers. Tricky Trek uses these "cute" little porcelain animals or minimals. I honestly don't know much about the game except for the fact that it was packaged in a deal with Basket Boss. So, stay tuned....I will try to write more about this one in the future.
