12/10/2009 - Tofo Day 3

Today was really quite an interesting day. In the morning, Jeremy and I sat down with Dena for breakfast. While eating, a motorcyclist that I had seen while staying in Maputo walked in. I waved and walked over to say hi. Though we had not really talked in Maputo, it was nice to see a familiar face, and he sat down and joined us for breakfast. It turns out that Miquel has been touring the world on his motorcycle for the past year and a half. He maintains a blog, and is also filming a documentary of his travels for a Spanish motorcycle channel. We chatted for some time, and then he departed. But, we planned on meeting up at Dino’s for dinner.

After breakfast and some lazy lounging, we decided to head down to the town’s only internet café to do some Italy planning and to update my blog (as you probably noticed from the huge amount of posts the other day). We ate lunch at the Waterworks, a nicely maintained and relatively new café. I ordered the Tuna Steak with boiled potatoes and Jeremy got the Prawn Curry. This is Africa, and though both meals were supposed to come with side salads, upon further inquiry, we found out that they decidedly didn’t come with salads. Jeremy got a salad, but they then tried to get him to pay for it. Yet the Tuna was fabulous. I love fish and Mozambique is simply paradise for cheap fish dishes.

Back at Turtle Cove, we sat around the pool, swam some, stared at the huge colony of red ants that had taken over the nearby tree and the only working hammock, and talked with Carl about his diving experiences before head headed in to pack for his journey on the next day. I have had a great time talking with Carl during the stay here, so it will be sad to see him off.

Jeremy and I wanted to do Yoga down at the beach, so we departed and also bought some bread for breakfast the next morning. We had a 6 am departure planned for our fishing/scuba trip and we needed some food for it. Yoga was nice, though sandy, and by the time it was over, we were hungry for dinner. We were a bit worried that Dena wouldn’t be able to make it, since it was very dark out, but when we arrived at Dino’s, both Miquel and Dena were there.

They had ordered appetizers already, and Miquel was already on his 2nd drink. Miquel is a talkative chap, but incredibly nice and a pleasure to spend time with. His travels provide him with a wealth of stories and you can honestly just spend the entire time listening to his tales. I have enough problems with buses in Africa on the dirt roads filled with potholes, and I have a horrendous time imagining what it must be like to ride a motorcycle over them.

For dinner, I ordered the grilled Barracuda fillet with a potato, and Jeremy ordered the calamari. It turns out that many of the fish dishes that we have ordered here were barracuda, and I really like this fish. While waiting for the food to arrive, we walked over to the surf shop and looked into some sun tan lotion that we desperately needed. Can you believe it; it costs about $15 for a small bottle of the cheap stuff! Ack, all of the money we have saved is sort of destroyed by lotion!

Anyhow, we walked back to our resort and settled in for what promised to be a wonderful day full of fishing and snorkeling.
