Woke up, exercised, and walked into the bar area with Jeremy to order breakfast. We wanted to order a hot breakfast one of these days, and since we are now out of most of our breakfast foods, today seemed like a prime day to do it. We ordered the English breakfast, which included 2 fried eggs, bacon (or thinly cut ham), toast, and tomatoes. As always, the food was good, and the price was unbeatable.
After breakfast, we played a game of Jambo while Dina and one of the local staff looked on with interest. It turned out that Dina had to take a trip to the next town to take Miquel some of his luggage, and Jeremy and I wanted to take a walk down the beach to see if we could find the lighthouse. After settling up on the room for tonight, we headed down to the market to purchase some sodas and coconut bread for breakfast tomorrow.
We had a quick snack of some bread and a soda before heading down the beach. We walked and walked until about 12:30 and then sat down on this really neat rock to eat. The rock, over time, has slowly been eaten away by the salt water, and it was riddled with holes and channels.
After eating, we began the long walk back. Sadly, the wind was blowing very strongly and in our faces for the entire walk back. I was pretty miserable. You couldn’t really talk, and the wind was dripping wet with moisture. My glasses kept fogging up and it was quite uncomfortable walking in wet shorts. It must have been about 2 hours when we finally made it back to Dino’s on the beach where we made up for the lack of pancakes and ice cream by ordering chocolate cake and ice cream. The ice cream was either homemade or it had been thawed and refrozen, as it had a different taste than ice cream usually has. It’s odd. If it was homemade, I would say it was good. Otherwise, it was rubbish.
We checked out the clothing shop attached to the restaurant, and then walked to the market to replace the bread that we ate for lunch. Instead of coconut bread, we purchased to baguettes. With peanut butter and bananas, they will make a wonderful breakfast on the hell ride tomorrow to Maputo. We need to be at the bottom of the hill from Turtle Cove at 4 am for the 10 hour journey.
I also purchased another soda from my favorite vendor. It seems that my favoritism is now making the vendors upset at me. Still, when I find someone who doesn’t pester me and doesn’t say “my friend, my friend,” over and over again, I am going to buy from them.
I may have mentioned this already, but the plethora of vendors on the beach is growing incredibly tiresome. There are so many young children selling carabineers full of shell bracelets. They come up to you and say, “My friend, I have a special price.” Or, they simply say, “sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry” over and over again until you stop and listen to their ridiculous attempt to get you to buy their bracelets. If you simply sit down to enjoy the ocean and eat some bread, you will be greeted by at least two bracelet sales kids and perhaps one or two other vendors of various items. I have some patience, but at other times, they really try my good humor.
Back at the room, I started packing my stuff up, and then decided to blog for a bit. If things go as planned, Jeremy and I will join Dina for dinner at Black and White tonight. We will head back to the room for an early night and then wake up around 3:30 am so that we can be down at the road by 4. The journey will take about 8 hours, and we will arrive in Maputo around 12:30. We will head to Fatima’s and then grab some lunch. I am hoping that we will get dinner at Sagres. Then, on Monday, we will wake up, change our money to South African Rands and catch a bus to Nelspruit. We have setup our lodging for the stay, so things are hopeful. We will be in Nelspruit for about 6 days before heading back to Johannesburg in the morning for a nighttime flight to Italy.
