Happy New Year! We woke up this morning, and it was pouring outside. It seems like it has rained everyday that we have been in Italy, and I am getting tired of it. Still, it was nice to have a forced day of rest.
Around noon, the rain let up some, and we ventured out to a laundry mat to take care of some clothes that were developing quite a stench. To wash our clothes, it cost 7 Euros. That’s about 11 US dollars. But it was worth it.
After returning to our room, we decided to take my netbook to a café that had advertised free wi-fi. The place was closed, but the owner or the worker in a clothing store next to it told us about an internet café that might be open. More importantly, we asked if he knew of any good restaurants that were also within our budget. He told us about “Il Barroccio.” After chatting for a bit with Stefano, we headed out in search of the restaurant. We stopped in, and the owner said that he could fix us a plate of spaghetti for a reasonable price! We knew that we had found the restaurant for our dinner that night.
We then decided to check out the Piazelle Michelangelo. This spot was high up on a hill, and was supposed to offer superb panoramic views of Florence. Sadly, it started to rain on our way up the hill, and it was super cloudy out. The views were good, but I am afraid that the pictures were not that great.
Heading down the hill, we decided to have an early dinner. We stopped back at the restaurant and we each ordered spaghetti with meat sauce. It was awesome. This was finally the Italian meal that I have been hoping for. The owner was very nice and we chatted a bit after dinner. I think that we will probably hit up this restaurant a few more times before leaving. The owner speaks excellent English, so it is possible for us to ask for a larger pasta portion than normal. We cannot really afford the standard first and second course meal, so a larger first pasta course is exactly what we want.
