We arrived at around noon, and checked into our hostel, "6 Small Rooms." The place is on the 5th floor of a building a bit off of one of the main roads. I am falling in love with these Italian buildings with their courtyards perfectly quaint charm.
After taking care of some unpacking, we headed out for a walking tour of the city. Our first stop was the Castel Nuovo.
This was followed shortly by the Castel Dell'Ovo.
At first glance, Naples just doesn't seem as nice as Rome. It is much dirtier, has much more graffiti, and it is terribly crowded. Still, the ocean front is nice, and there are some spectacular views of the city from the higher sections. Also, Naples has tons of back alleys that are absolutely brilliant to get lost in. However, you must always be careful to stay out of the way of the fast moving scooters and cars that also like to travel through the very narrow alleys!
We ate some gelatto in the Piazza Plebiscito, and then decided to take a funicolare ride to the Vomero section of the city. We were told that there were some spectacular views of the city there. At the top of the hill, we paid to enter the Castel S. Elmo, which definitely had some great views. From here, you could look down on the city and see just how dense it really is.
But you could also look out over the ocean.
For dinner, we ate at an authentic Naples pizza join. Pizza is even cheaper here. I hope I do not grow tired of it, because it is about all that I can afford in the long run.
