So, today, Jeremy and I went to Pompeii. Honestly, the site was not what I had expected. I thought that it would be this old set of ruins covered in volcanic ash.
This picture was taken near the entrance to the excavation site. The start of the map also included a number of other beautifully restored sites, but the best part of the city lurked a bit further away.
This section of the city actually reminded me more of a bombed out European city than a 2,000 year old ancient civilization. It was amazing. It actually forced me to think twice as I was walking along the ruins. The buildings were destroyed, but the streets and the shells of the buildings allowed you to imagine what things had been like before they were destroyed. You could imagine people living in the homes, baking bread, and going about their everyday lives.
Of course, the volcano did erupt. And people did die, as evidenced by these plaster casts left behind in volcanic ash.
We arrived back in Naples around 5:30, bought our tickets for Florence, and ate pizza at Di Michele. Di Michele is one of the most famous pizza places in Italy, and for a good reason. The pizza was awesome. Still, the line to get into the restaurant seemed a bit excessive.
That's it. I'm going to get ready for bed. We have a busy day planned for tomorrow: a tour of the Amalfi Coast.
